On 25 August 2025, the Gig Workers Bill 2025 (“the Bill“) was tabled for its first reading in the Dewan Rakyat by the Human Resources Minister, YB Steven Sim. The Bill seeks to enhance the protection and welfare of gig workers in Malaysia.

Key features of the Bill include the definitions of “gig worker” and “platform provider”, mandatory requirements for service agreements between contracting entities and gig workers, recognition of gig workers’ rights, and the establishment of a dispute resolution mechanism to address complaints.

Our Partner, Ms. Janice Anne Leo, in her capacity as Deputy Co-Chairperson of the Bar Council Industrial and Employment Law Committee, had the privilege of attending the first reading of the Bill.
The second and third readings of the Bill will be on 28 August 2025 (Thursday).
